ERIC KELLY VS ROB LISITA

Featherweight Bout | Main Event

The weigh-ins for Friday’s ONE FC 18 are in the books, and the 10-fight card is official in Taiwan.

Only one fighter missed the weight, and that is in a bout that saw him get a new opponent at the last minute.

Zhang Zheng Jie didn’t pass his pre-fight medical exam and was removed from his fight against Rayner Kinsiong. Jie teammate Eliot Corley was called on as a replacement and successfully made weight for the lightweight bout at 154 pounds. But Kinsiong came in heavy at 157, forcing the preliminary-card fight into catchweight status.

Everyone on the main card, though, is good to go. In the headlining spot, featherweights Eric Kelly (10-1) and Rob Lisita (14-5) each weighed in at 145 pounds. And in the co-feature, unbeaten Brazilian Rafael Nunes (10-0) was 154 for his lightweight fight against Koji Ando (9-3-2), who was 155.

“ONE FC 18: War of Dragons” takes place Friday at National Taiwan University Sports Center in Taipei City. The card streams in North America as an online pay-per-view.

Watch USA Lacrosse vs Canada 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championships 2014

USA LACROSSE VS CANADA LIVE STREAM

What: USA vs. Canada to kick off 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championship
When: Thursday, July 10, at 9 p.m. ET
Where: Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Denver, Colorado

The United States-Canada rivalry is about to add another chapter to its legendary history.

This time, the two countries will wield sticks, helmets and more in an all-out war that kicks off the 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championships, a tournament that features a record 38 nations and spans 142 matches over the course of just 10 days.

Even better, the showdown between the two countries goes down just hours after the opening ceremony and also happens to be a rematch of the hotly contested 2010 championship game. Bill Schoonmaker, chief operating officer for U.S. Lacrosse, put the magnitude of the matchup into perspective, per the tournament's website.

ARGENIS MENDEZ VS RANCES BARTHELEMY

IBF TITLE (BOXING)
The American Airlines Arena, Downtown Miami

Two days before Canelo Alvarez faces Erislandy Lara on pay-per-view, Argenis Mendez and Rances Barthelemy will headline on FOX Sports 1 in a rematch for Mendez's IBF super featherweight title, following a controversial fight in January on the season premiere of ESPN Friday Night Fights.

That night in Minneapolis, challenger Barthelemy (19-0, 12 KO) dominated Mendez in the opening two rounds, dropping Mendez two times in the second round. The problem was, the second knockdown came from a punch that landed clearly after the bell. Though Barthelemy was rewarded the title that night, the Minnesota commission rightly reversed the decision, changing it to a no-contest, which returned the belt to Mendez.

The IBF then also did the right thing, ordering an immediate rematch, and we've got it on tap now. Mendez (21-2-1, 11 KO) will surely be the underdog going in this time, but it's still a very good matchup, and early wipeout fights like that between two good fighters can be fluky, so Barthelemy and his team will be wise to not expect something similar the second time around.

The line between insanity and genius is said to be a fine one, and in early 20thcentury France, anyone envisaging a near-2,500-km-long cycle race across the country would have been widely viewed as unhinged. But that didn’t stop Géo Lefèvre, a journalist with L’Auto magazine at the time, from proceeding with his inspired plan. His editor, Henri Desgrange, was bold enough to believe in the idea and to throw his backing behind the Tour de France. And so it was that, on 1 July 1903, sixty pioneers set out on their bicycles from Montgeron. After six mammoth stages (Nantes - Paris, 471 km!), only 21 “routiers”, led by Maurice Garin, arrived at the end of this first epic.

Having provoked a mixture of astonishment and admiration, le Tour soon won over the sporting public and the roadside crowds swelled. The French people took to their hearts this unusual event which placed their towns, their countryside and, since 1910, even their mountains, in the spotlight.

Le Tour has always moved with the times. Like France as a whole, it benefited from the introduction of paid holidays from 1936; it has lived through wars, and then savoured the “trente glorieuses” period of economic prosperity while enjoying the heydays of Coppi, Bobet, Anquetil, Poulidor and it has opened itself up to foreign countries with the onset of globalisation. Over a hundred years after its inception, le Tour continues to gain strength from its experience.

Brazil is still the favorite to win the Cup on its home turf. But there have been disquieting signs. The nominal striker, Fred, has been mostly pedestrian. The form of wingers Oscar and Hulk has been in and out, the central midfield tandem of Luiz Gustavo and Paulinho hasn’t dominated as expected, the central defense has sometimes looked disorganized, the fullbacks haven’t been involved in the offense, and keeper Julio Cesar has looked rusty.

So it’s been up to Neymar to carry the team, as well as Brazil’s footballing mystique, and he has done so with aplomb, scoring four goals and terrorizing defenses.

But with his supporting cast struggling, Brazil needed the full 120 minutes and penalties to get past a hard-charging Chile in the round of 16. And let’s say it flat out, Colombia is a lot better than Chile and indeed has been stunningly impressive so far.

It starts at the back, where David Ospina has been as good as any keeper not named Howard. Fullbacks Pablo Armero and Juan Zuniga have been as dangerous as Brazil’s Marcelo and Alves were supposed to be. Juan Cuadrado is smartly getting the ball in dangerous positions to the right man, James Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has outdone even Neymar in this Cup, scoring five goals, a couple of them jaw-dropping. This guy is the real deal.

Brazil is in serious danger today of leaving their own Cup at disturbingly premature stage. Can the Brazilians get their act together and clear the highest hurdle of their tournament so far? Stay tuned and find out!
